Effective Screenwriting Habits for Newcomers

After receiving his degree in film in 2018 from the New Film School in New York City, Sawyer Petrick began searching for entry-level positions in the industry. Sawyer Petrick desires to gain experience as a screenwriter.

Developing skills as a screenwriter entails more than just finding mentors to shadow or collaborating with other aspiring writers to discuss ideas. Even before an aspiring screenwriter gathers the courage to share an idea, they may face great self-doubt and indecision. Some cannot finalize which idea to transform into a script, whereas others may fear criticism from others so much that they don’t even finish the first draft. Even if someone’s idea initially motivates them to write the first draft, they may grow weary of it or lose motivation to complete it.

The most important habit to becoming a screenwriter is finding productive writing time every day and addressing any internal and external issues that prevent you from taking advantage of it. After determining a suitable time, set a realistic daily page quota, even if you must struggle through writer’s block to meet it. Save most editing until after finishing the first draft because editing a work in progress will stall its completion. Even if you are dissatisfied with the first draft, as long as you complete one, you will have a useful body of work to show others when you want feedback.

Writing Chapter 1 of an Anticipated Sequel

Sawyer Petrick is a passionate screenwriter who authored two screenplays that received high honors from The New School in New York. Sawyer Petrick also served as a writer at Whole Picture Films from 2018 to 2019, where he worked on multiple feature film writing scripts.

Sequels are similar to second installments to already-rated stories, and writers need an extra set of precision and punctiliousness when writing these stories. Great sequels are very challenging to write since the writers need to meet the expectations of devoted fans who have seen the prequel and anticipate more.

While fans have different theories as regards what the next line of events should be, historically, great sequels introduce unpredictable events. As a writer, you should address the questions from your story's fans in a less predictable style.

Successful sequel writers lead the second installment with an independent plotline. The first chapter should feel as though you are starting from scratch rather than using the prequel as a preliminary. For example, if your prequel is about a series of events that occurred during the winter in a school, you may lead the sequel's first chapter with events that occurred during the summer vacation. A moderate time-lapse is required at least.

The chapter one of a sequel should summarize the changes within the gap. For example, you should tell your story's fans how many changes have occurred in a character's life during the time-lapse. Your prequel fans may want to know what the characters are up to. You can dedicate the first chapter to these questions.

Role of Script Consultants

A graduate of The New School in New York City, Sawyer Petrick is passionate about film and television. While an undergraduate, he received an A grade with high honors for his senior capstone screenplay, The Newsboy Racket. Sawyer Petrick also served as a writer and script consultant with Whole Picture Films, where he consulted on the feature film script “The Speech.”

Script consultants work with scripts and screenwriters to help them polish their scripts. They offer feedback and provide development notes about how the writer can improve scenes or sections of dialog. They may also provide verbal feedback, and highlight issues with the script such as continuity errors.

When searching for a script consultant, a good place to start is to focus on their qualifications. There are no industry standards for consulting, meaning anybody can work as a script consultant. To weed out the writers with little experience, look for consultants who list a range of projects they've worked on. Also, ask for a sample of the consultant’s work. Pay close attention to the logline to confirm the consultant understood the screenwriter’s intentions. Also examine the consultant’s notes, looking for examples of constructive feedback versus criticism that points out faults but provides no solutions.

NY Giants Hire Manager & Head Coach

Sawyer Petrick is a graduate of the New School who has worked as a scriptwriter for Whole Picture Films in New York City. In his free time, Sawyer Petrick enjoys following the New York Giants.

Following a 2022 season that saw the team finish a disappointing 4-13, the New York Giants spent the early months of the off-season shaking up their leadership. In January, the franchise announced Joe Schoen as its new general manager.

Schoen comes to New York having most recently served as assistant general manager in Buffalo, where he helped to guide the Bills to two consecutive AFC East titles. He replaces the retiring Dave Gettleman, who spent the previous four years as the Giants' general manager.

Schoen’s first responsibility was finding a new head coach after the dismissal of Joe Judge earlier in January. One week after his own hiring, Schoen did just that, bringing on former Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll to fill the role. Prior to coming to New York, Schoen and Daboll spent four years together in Buffalo, where the latter was credited with the impressive development of quarterback Josh Allen.

The Giants have fallen on hard times over the last 10 seasons, and particularly over the last five, tying for the worst record in the NFL during this time. With a new general manager and head coach in place, the four-time Super Bowl-winning franchise hopes to return to the top of the NFL.

How The New York Giants Got Their Name

An experienced bartender and screenwriter based in New York, Sawyer Petrick holds an EBS certificate from the New York Bartending School and a bachelor’s degree in film from The New School. Sawyer Petrick also loves to play the guitar and is an avid fan of the National Football League’s New York Giants.

The New York Giants are an American football team founded in 1925. The team has won four NFL championships and four Super Bowls. Founding owner Tim Mara came up with the team’s name.

Mara named his team after the National League’s New York Giants, the city’s popular Major League Baseball franchise. In those early years, baseball was a favorite sport in New York. Mara decided to name his football team The New York Giants to entice baseball and other sports fans to support the newly formed NFL team. The baseball team had been named after the giant buildings being built in New York City.

The Best Action Movies of 2021

The action movie genre is one of the most lucrative and popular in film. In 2021, major action blockbusters took the box office by storm. In addition to their success in theaters, these movies left a strong impression on audiences and provided a much-needed sanctuary during the difficult times of the pandemic.

Cinemas witnessed the return of familiar action movie characters including the legendary spy, James Bond. In his final turn as the British secret agent, Daniel Craig reprised his James Bond role in No Time to Die. Directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, the film co-starred Lea Seydoux, Rami Malek, Lashana Lynch, and Ana de Armas, alongside other franchise regulars like Ben Whishaw and Naomie Harris. Critics and audiences alike declared that the final installment in Craig’s Bond films is a satisfying conclusion to the franchise.

The Matrix is another iconic action franchise that made its return to the big screen in 2021. Lana Wachowski’s latest is set 20 years after the original trilogy. Reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss go back into the Matrix, where they must fight new enemies while protecting their love. The Matrix Resurrections garnered mixed reviews with some fans expressing their disappointment with Wachowski’s approach to Neo’s revival. The film scored 65 percent on Rotten Tomatoes based on over 200 critic reviews.

Unsurprisingly, the action genre reaped the most money through Marvel movies. Two record-breaking Marvel films demonstrated some of the best action sequences of 2021: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: No Way Home. The former made history as the first Asian superhero film led by an all-Asian cast, including Simu Liu, Tony Leung, and Michelle Yeoh. The film’s fight scenes and captivating family drama make it stand out amongst Marvel’s superhero productions.

However, beloved superheroes with avid fanbases continued to reign the box office. In only 12 days, Spider-Man: No Way Home, the latest installment in the Tom Holland-led film series became the top grossing film of 2021. The film’s incorporation of previous Spiderman heroes and villains generated a frenzy of applause and raves at cinemas worldwide. It’s the first film to make over $1 billion dollars at the global box office since 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Original action films also made a significant contribution to the action genre in 2021. Starring Bob Odenkirk, Nobody follows former assassin Hutch Mansell who must confront his dangerous past. Featuring excellent action choreography, the film owes its success to writer Derek Kolstad, the man behind the John Wick franchise.

Infusing the action genre with Western tones, The Harder They Fall opened the 2021 London Film Festival, where critics praised its distinct style. After its premiere, it streamed on Netflix, where audiences got the chance to experience an inventive, compelling Western film starring award-winning actors like Regina Hall, Jonathan Majors, Lakeith Stanfield, Idris Elba, and Zazie Beetz.

The action genre also witnessed some refreshing animated entries in 2021. Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon contains intricate fight sequences combined with a positive message at its heart. The film earned more than 20 nominations for Best Animated Feature and is included on the BBC’s best films of 2021 list.

Some of the Best Drills to Improve Shooting

An aspiring screenwriter based in New York City, New York, Sawyer Petrick graduated from The New School's film program in 2018 and has since contributed to the development of scripts for a web series and feature film. Outside of his professional endeavors, Sawyer Petrick enjoys reading and playing basketball.

While there are many different ways to improve your game, the goal in basketball is pretty simple: shoot the ball through the hoop. Players should regularly practice passing, rebounding, and setting screens, but shooting the ball should be prioritized. Shooting from different areas of the court in an unstructured session helps, but there are also several shooting drills that can improve a player's timing, release, and accuracy in pressure situations. One of these exercises is the 99 shooting drill.

Another player should be positioned below the rim as a rebounder to start this drill. The player shooting the ball should be in constant motion around the arc while pulling up to take shots from different locations. The player receives three points for every make and loses three points for consecutive misses. The goal is to reach 99 points as quick as possible.

The 5-5-5 drill is also effective at improving shooting form and footwork. With a chair set up inside the arc to function as a defender, the player should take five shots moving to the right with left-right footwork, followed by five shots to the left with right-left footwork. This should be followed by five shots alternating between both left and right footwork. This drill helps improve footwork and shooting rhythm.

Tips for Overcoming Writer's Block

The recipient of a bachelor's degree in film from The New School, Sawyer Petrick is a New York City, New York-based screenwriter with prior experience in marketing. Sawyer Petrick most recently worked as a consultant at Whole Picture Films and contributed to the development of scripts for The Speech and The Look.

Writer's block is a common struggle that affects all writers, from amateurs to professionals. During a Writers Guild of America Awards panel in 2018, Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin revealed he has writer's block most days. Fortunately, there are several different things writers can do to help address writer's block. The act of writing can even be a solution.

Those struggling on a particular project should try and write about a different subject. This can include a magazine article or blog post, or even something that won't be published. Consider writing about whatever comes to mind, and then throw it out if you want. Repeat until you feel comfortable enough to return to the original material. You can also try writing from a different perspective or starting from a different point in your story.

There are other ways to get through writer’s block as well. For example, you can give your brain a break by going outside and spending time in nature. Go for a long walk or trail run to relieve stress and inspire creativity.

Is a Bartending License Mandatory

Sawyer Petrick is a screenwriter who has worked as a consultant on the script of the movie The Speech and wrote the second episode of the web series The Look. Apart from being a screenwriter, Sawyer Patrick has also had extensive experience serving as a barback and later doing front-of-house duties like serving diners and handling beverage orders. He is a licensed bartender and holds an EBS certificate from the New York Bartending School.

Many foods and beverage establishments are beginning to demand licenses as a requirement for their staff. They do this to ensure that the bartender knows the fundamentals before serving customers. But not all states in America require their bartenders to obtain a certificate before practicing their craft for pay. Local laws in certain states such as Texas demand that the bartender gets a state-verified certificate to sell alcohol. Certificates like these are primarily on alcohol awareness and preventing the sale of alcohol to minors.

Bartenders do not need a license to become a bartender, and there is no formal bartending certificate in the United States. However, understanding local laws and the requirements of most establishments is necessary for smooth practice. While bartending courses usually contain what is needed to practice effectively in a state, it is expedient to double-check that it meets all local law requirements.

Common Elements of Good Screenplay

Sawyer Petrick has a degree in film from the New School, and is working toward becoming an established television or film screenwriter. In line with his aspirations, Sawyer Petrick has already started to make inroads on his chosen career by writing scripts for Whole Picture Films.

A script or screenplay is a story meant to be translated into film. Screenplays contain basic story elements that allow them to capture the hearts and minds of audiences.

One element is the character at the heart of the story. Through his or her actions a character drives the story to its progression and conclusion. A character should be realistic and well-conceived, but not perfect. Flawed characters are relatable and become the hook that allows audiences to become attached.

Every good screenplay shows the character going on an external journey and an internal journey. The external journey consists of what the character does in the story. The internal journey is what happens inside the character as he or she faces the challenges of the external journey. The internal journey shows the character growing and evolving as the story progresses.

The external and internal journey of a character happen within the context of the plot. The plot comprises the events that define what the story is about. There are numerous plot archetypes available to the screenplay writer. One popular archetype is the hero’s journey, where a character is compelled to undertake a quest of some kind. Another popular plot is the boy meets girl plot: boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy wins girl back.

Breaking Into Screenwriting

While studying for a BA in film from The New School, Sawyer Petrick wrote a screenplay called Peace Be Upon You, which was accepted in the university’s 9th Annual Voice/Over Script Reading competition. After he graduated, he wrote the second episode of a web series called The Look. With a passion for writing feature films and sitcoms, Sawyer Petrick is intent on breaking into screenwriting.

Screenwriter and producer CJ Walley has some good advice for aspiring screenwriters. He points to how the traditional way of breaking into the industry has changed largely because of the technologies currently available.

Traditionally, a writer created a script and circulated the script to potential interested parties. Circulating the script meant calling producers on the phone and mailing them physical copies of the work.

In the traditional method, a screenwriter had enough level of familiarity with the industry to have a network of people to call and make offers. Having this network coupled with the manual work of sending the script formed a type of barrier to entry that limited the pool of screenwriters.

With the arrival of the internet and email, this barrier no longer exists. Through research over the internet, producers and other interested parties can be discovered, and work can be done in any part of the world and sent in remotely. This has resulted in an increase of script submissions, making it harder for an individual entry to get noticed.

In order to circumvent this situation, Walley recommends the creation of a strong social media presence. This means utilizing the internet through the creation of media to promote not only scripts but also the screenwriter.

Actual scripts should be available on the web for anyone to read. This will increase the chances of the right person reading a script and leading to an opportunity. Walley recommends this approach because it has worked for him - he has received writing assignments thanks to his social media presence.

Giants Fortify Their Coaching Staff

After Sawyer Petrick graduated from The New School with a bachelor’s degree in media studies with a concentration in screenwriting, he joined Whole Picture Films as a writer. A resident of New York City, Sawyer Petrick is an avid fan of the New York Giants, a professional football team that competes in the National Football League.

The Giants have fortified their coaching staff by adding three new assistant coaches. The team announced the hiring of Russ Callaway, Ryan Anderson and Carter Blount on April 8, 2021. They will help Giants head coach Joe Judge heading to the start of the 2021 NFL season opener in September.

Callaway will work with the Giants as offensive quality control coach. He started his coaching career working under Judge in 2011 as a defensive analyst at Alabama. He went on to spend two years with Murray State as recruiting coordinator and wide receivers coach. Blount will work alongside Anderson as defensive quality control coach. He also worked under Judge at Alabama as a special teams analyst in 2009. He was the special teams quality control analyst at University of Tennessee under then head coach Jeremy Pruitt, who is currently the Giants’ senior defensive assistant.

Screenwriting Tips

With experience writing an episode of a web series and consulting on a film script, Sawyer Petrick has a professional interest in the entertainment industry. Having graduated with a BA in film from The New School, Sawyer Petrick is particularly interested in screenwriting.

Screenwriting involves creating screenplays or scripts to be used as the basis of a story for a movie or TV show. Here are some tips for new screenwriters:

Know the characters well. Having deep knowledge of the characters of the screenplay - the protagonist, the antagonist, and the supporting characters - is a necessity. Viewers must be able to empathize with the hero or heroine in the sense of being able to relate to them. Each character’s actions must be believable when considered in light of their goals, personality, and values.

Read other scripts. The importance of familiarizing yourself with genre conventions cannot be overemphasized. Screenwriters who are focused on a particular genre should read screenplays in the genre in order to know how the most successful scripts were put together and why unsuccessful scripts didn’t work out.

Craft realistic dialogue. Dialogue gives life to the characters and provides valuable information about their personalities, values, and life experiences to the viewer. For example, dialogue can convey information like a character’s education level, where they grew up, and how outgoing they are, among other insights.
